On Air: TV Asahi 2000 Jul 7 - Sep
Yamada Naoko (Nakama) is a not so 'saleable' magician who is fired by her workplace. One day, she comes across an advertisement in a magazine put up by Ueda Jirou (Abe), a physicist, inviting people to come forward to prove that they have supernatural power and if they succeed, money will be given. Tempted by the money, Naoko goes and look for Ueda trying to trick him with her magical tricks. I missed the first episode so I'm not very sure what happened, but anyway, Ueda asked Naoko to go with him to investigate a woman's claim to her supernatural power. With the end of this case, there are more cases which require the two to come together and reveal the many tricks used by various magicians to claim that they have supernatural power.
Quite an interesting drama which reveals some of the common tricks used by magicians. The combination between Nakama and Abe is really good! It's quite hilarious to hear the sarcastic remarks make to each other and their subtle facial expressions are quite humorous. The only thing which perplexed me is that at the end of each case, one is not very sure if supernatural power does exist or not. Overall, it's quite a good watch. With the success of this drama, a sequel Trick 2 is shown in Japan in the year 2002 starting on Jan 11.
Title: Trick 2

Cast: Nakama Yukie, Abe Hiroshi
Theme: "Ryuuseigun" by Onitsuka Chihiro
On Air: TV Asahi 2001 Jan 11 - Mar 22
Following from the prequel, Ueda Jirou (Abe) has written a book titled "Don to koi", a collection of past trick incidents which HE has uncovered, and many people has come forward to ask him to investigate some unnatural cases. With each case, he will always go and look for Yamada Naoko (Nakama) and together, the two will discover the tricks that are used to conjure up a supernatural event.
Compare to Trick 1, I personally prefer this sequel since it is more realistic as everything can be explained with science or magic tricks. This is unlike Trick 1 which seems to hint on the existence of supernatural power. The humour continues to be quite subtle but the first episode left me laughing hard as they try to imitate Kindaichi. The sequel also emphasis more on the care and concern between the two partners even though both deny it. Quite a good watch and it's probably quite a success with the Japanese viewers since the next sequel is produced and Trick 3 is actually on air in Japan now.
